Champions Crowned at .90 Season Finale

Atco Dragway – September 5th & 6th – The Mid Atlantic .90 Series closed out it is 2020 campaign in style at the Famous South Jersey facility on Labor Day weekend. On Saturday, Young Gun Chase Fahnestock ended a long year and a half winless drought with a win in Super Comp. Fahnestock, took advantage of Bill Hardifer’s misfortune when the throttle stop reset and caused a .388 light. Fahnestock ran it out to a 9.036 for the win. In Super Gas, Bob Phillips found his way into the winner circle when he matched up against 1986 World Champ Ron Orbin. Phillips led wire to wire with a .022 light and a 9.918 for the win. Finally, in Super Street, a battle of Camaros found themselves in the finals. Rick Mattioli and Kelli Barbato squared off for the title, Barbato was looking for every point possible to claim a championship but, Mattioli stopped her in the finals with a .007 light to Barbato’s .014 as both ran identical 10.922.

As we turned our attention to Championship day for the series, In Super Gas Hank Smith needed to outlast the competition and keep going round to claim his 1st championship. Smith did one better by finding himself in the finals against Jeff Fisher. Hank would claim his 4th race of the year with a .022 and 9.907 forcing Fisher to break-out with a 9.893. Another first-time champ was crowned also in Super Comp, Kevin Scholl claimed his first championship after a 1st round victory after many years of coming up just short. In the final though it was Tony Barrett claiming his first victory with a win over Greg Hays. Barrett took the win with a hole shot victory 8.925 to 8.914 over Hays for his first victory in the series. Rounding out the day was Super Street, which saw Ron Ross in a borrowed car take the victory over Jason Lawrence. Ross also won on a hole shot with a 10.918 to defeat Lawrence’s perfect 10.900. In the end Keith Mayers claimed his 5th championship with the series by 5 points over Barbato. Congrats to all the 2020 Champions, Kevin Scholl (SC), Hank Smith (SG) and Keith Mayers (SST).
